Republican-American columnist Tracey O’Shaughnessy will be speaking about social commentary, the newspaper business and her new book, “Put the Kettle On,” Saturday, from noon to 2 p.m. at Elizabeth Richards, Barcaly Square, Woodbury.  O’Shaughnessy, who has been with the newspaper for 22 years, will sign copies of her new book, published by Equa Press. She will discuss her book, newspaper career and the newspaper industry in general.  “Put The Kettle On,” her second book, is a collection of some of her award-winning commentary, speeches and longer essays, loosely links the idea of connection in an overly connected world. Shopping Local: Why it is important, now more than ever

We were headed out to a picnic when I spotted it.  A moving truck, backed up to the little fried chicken shop that opened in our town not too long ago.  After a few days of riding by, and noticing that they looked closed, I guess this was my confirmation of what I knew was true, they were out of business.  My heart sank, and I felt a wave of sadness for the family that tried to make a go of it.  But then sadness was replaced with anger.
